The Thirsting Soul

September 5, 2012

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” – John 4:14. Jesus spoke these words while teaching the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. He was referring to the Holy Spirit, a great gift that Jesus bestows upon the believer; a gift that can cleanse us, temper us, and quench us for all of eternity. Our souls need renewal just as our bodies do! Just as our bodies cannot go for long without water, our spirit also needs nourishment! Jesus provides us with that nourishment through “living water”, the Holy Spirit that is sent to us, into us, and through us, providing us with renewal, strength, and eternal life! Jesus offers us immortality! And Jesus has given us the ability to pass on this renewal to others! “He that believeth on me as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” – John 7:38. Jesus was giving us the gift of the Holy Spirit and the ability to give this gift to others!

One of God’s great purposes in His creation was to communicate, and dwell with us, to enjoy fellowship with us. One of the ways He does this is through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which is granted the believer once he has been saved! While the indwelling is not an experience in and of itself, it can provide spiritual experiences, and continually renew us and quench the thirst of our spirits. It is the source of new life on the believer! The Holy Spirit is the source from which springs our eternal life, and our eternal sustenance and provision. Jesus grants this freely upon the true believer! “… I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.” – Revelation 21:6. How can we obtain this life giving water? Through faith in Jesus Christ! “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” – Revelation 22:17. This verse tells us that the Holy Spirit and the church work in tandem! Through the church, the Holy Spirit can work to evangelize the world! All it takes is faith in Jesus Christ, that he is our redeemer, and that through Him, and only through Him can you be saved, and you too can enjoy the life affirming pleasure of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling within you! You too can enjoy eternal life!

It isn’t hard to become thirsty. Spiritual fulfillment and contentment are very hard to obtain, and completely impossible without faith in Jesus! The world today is filled with so much evil, so much jealousy, anger, hatred, and betrayal! It becomes almost impossible to form good relationships, and what’s worse, I’ve begun to see these horrible qualities creating rifts and barriers in the midst of entire families! From my own personal experience, my own family refuses to support my marriage and accept my wife and step-children! There is no cause for this, my wife certainly didn’t give them any reason! It can become easy to slip into depression, disillusionment, and hopelessness. You begin to feel that there isn’t any better, or that the world is lost, or on the brink of becoming lost. And this is very easy when your social interactions consist of almost nothing but a barrage of cussing and insults. I can barely read an internet forum without someone (usually more than just one, but at least one) jumps in to the discussion simply to hurl insults and generally try to bring the discussion to a screaming halt! I am an avid gamer, and have been since the days of Atari 2600, and today, I can barely play online with other players without being the recipient of numerous insults and derogatory remarks, or at the very least, hearing this “rage talk” amongst the other players. Now, I can nerd rage with the best of them, but I’ve never seen the point, nor felt the need to rage on another human player. If I’m being bested by someone with superior skill, that’s one thing, but it’s entirely another matter when a programmed artificial intelligence is giving you the business. The only recipients of my nerd rage are my loving and tolerant wife and children who simply declare that “dad’s gone crazy again” and walk away.

This is just one example from personal experience (I don’t get out much) showing how easy it is to lose touch with what’s important, and to thirst for what is! And this doesn’t even cover the gamut of other factors such as the job market, the economy, and natural disasters! This was simply people screaming insults at other people over a video game! How would they react to a real problem? Jesus gives us the spiritual nourishment that we all desire and innately need through the Holy Spirit, and he asks us to pass this gift on to others, especially our children! “For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring.” – Isaiah 44:3. Have faith in Jesus! Have faith in His guiding hand, take His gift of the Holy Spirit, and be renewed! I promise that when you do, your life will be filled with joy and contentment! Know that no matter what, there is always hope in the Lord Jesus! Blessings upon all of you!
