Psalm 139: The Character of God

September 1, 2012

The world needs God!! We, as man, can do nothing without Him. We need His grace, glory, and love. Our futures are in His loving, capable hands! All our hopes and all our dreams are safe with Him! He is all powerful, all knowing, and nothing is too hard or too easy for Him. In today’s times, it is far too easy to fall in to disillusionment and become disheartened with our lives. With the current political decline, looming global economic failure, and deadly natural disasters, it is easy to become fearful and lose hope in our futures. Becoming disheartened and unhappy with our lives can happen when the reality of our lives doesn’t match up with our hopes and dreams. Maybe you have felt that your best days are behind you, and maybe you have felt that past mistakes have caught up with you and caused your entire future to fall into disarray. But rest assured, that there is no past mistake or failure that can ruin your future. God is always with you, and He has our futures very much in His hands!!

There is no better proof than Psalm 139. It describes the very essence of the Lord God, and compares His attributes to our own. It shows just how much we need Him in our lives every day, and how we cannot do anything worthwhile without Him. We depend on His love and guidance, and we are but lost when we refuse it.

In Genesis, we were created in His image, but we were not created to be gods like Him. We simply share in His divine image. Everyone has knowledge, at least to some degree, but only God has all knowledge (omniscience). Verses 3 and 4 show the all-knowing nature of the Lord God. “Thou compassest my path… and art acquainted with all my ways.” and “…there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.” God knows all! There is nothing that can be hidden from Him! Such knowledge was not meant for us. We’ve seen this truth in Genesis: Adam and Eve were not meant to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. To do so would make them as gods. Verse 6 shows us how overwhelming such knowledge would be to us. “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.” We cannot obtain this level of knowledge, and we were never meant to! We need God, for He knows all, knows all that we do not, and only He knows what is best for us!!

Everyone has a presence. When we attend a party or other social event, or even return home to our families after a day at work, our presence is recognized, and hopefully, desired. But only God has presence at all times, and everywhere (omnipresence). We cannot hide from Him, even if we try! Verse 7: “Whither shall I go from thy spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence?” There is nowhere we can go that He cannot find us! Verse 8: “If I ascend up into heaven thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.” God is everywhere. We need not fear His absence!! God is constantly working, constantly moving and shaping our lives to His will!

Everyone has some degree of power! We have the power to shape young minds and lives, or create buildings, plant trees or flowers, even create electricity to power our homes and this laptop that I write this posting on! But only God has unlimited power (omnipotence). Only God could create such wonders as the universe and the stars and planets that inhabit it. Only God has the power to create life! Verse 14: “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” Only God has to power to create man from His will alone! There is no task, no request of us that is too hard for Him! There is nothing that He cannot do, and no promise that He cannot keep!

Our response as Christians is to submit to His will and His leadership! We can be nothing without Him! He is wise in all things, He has the ultimate power to protect us, and He knows what is best for us!! There can be no better leader for us to follow! Verses 23-24: “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Pray to God to lead us to our everlasting life with Him!

Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.” – Isaiah 26:4

  1. Oh, lovely. This psalm could have been written just for me; in fact I think perhaps it was. It speaks to my deepest insecurities and fears and wraps me up in His love and protection. Thank you so much for your inspired and sensitive discussion.

  2. Hi Jay, I love Psalm 139. We memorized it as a family one time – at least parts of it. So special for us to remember. I love majoring on God’s character as you have done here. He is my Rock! Blessings, Amy
